Palawan Trip – Day 2
Vivo City/Harbour Front and Tilt-shift photography
December 28, 2009 – Vivo City/Harbour Front, Singapore
When my wife says she wants to go Vivo City to look for some office clothes, i decided to tag along and bring my 500D so i won’t get bored waiting. I experiment a bit and the product is a newbie shot on tilt photography.

Vivo City Children's Playground - 1/400s, f/3.5, AWB, ISO 100
The shot above is taken from the top of Vivo City, since I am trying a miniature effect, the first thing that comes in my mind is to take photos of little children. This one is a bit far from being a real tilt-shift, but as always, I like it just the way is it.

Vivo City Ground - 1/125, f/3.5, AWB, ISO 200
The ground area with a big ball of flowers manage to create the miniature effects of a tilt-shifted image.
For more miniature pics, see below.

Chinese Garden Outing and my 1st attempt to do an HDR
December 26, 2009 It was a day after Christmas, and we (me and erik) are looking for things to do or should I say scenes to shoot. So after reading for the Outings and Gatherings session of ClubSnap, we decided to gatecrashed on one of their outings. The location, CHINESE GARDEN!
It was a very hot sunny morning, around 9:30-10:00Am when we arrived Chinese Garden MRT, we meet the CS group that is doing a photoshoot there and we just joined them. Good thing they are all kind enough to allow us to gatecrash. My intention there is actually just to shoot the bridge and do an HDR out of it. I saw one photograph, i will try to get the link if i can still find it, that really attracts my attention, so i will try to make a good copy of it.
The bridge above is a three bracketed exposure of -1, 0 and +1 EV. Tonemapped at Photomatix and adjusted saturation and Contrast at Capture ONE. Its not really the best HDR or should I say, it doesn’t really looks like an HDR but nevertheless, It fits exactly the look and feel that im looking for.
The photo above is a gardener in the Japanese Garden tending to one of the bonsai trees. I love the clear reflection from the water that still manage to come out after rendering in HDR.
Three bracket exposure with same setup as the first picture.
The whole group, including me and erik. It was fun being with these guys and gals. Next outing will be the New Year’s Eve at Marina.
Thanks for viewing and have a good day!
Psalmideo Chorale – Esplanade Christmas 2009 Concert
December 13, 2009 – Esplanade Theater by the Bay
We joined he PinoySG Badminton Club in watching Babes Conde and Friends at the Esplanade Concert by the Bay for December. This is actually my second time to have an outing with my Canon 500D, the concert shots are all handheld and the quality are so far from being good. But we enjoy the night, we sing together with the group (karaoke style) and had a wonderful evening.

Babe Conde and Friends - A Night of Filipino and Christmas Music
Handheld – 1/50s, f/5.6, ISO 1600. Although its not a very good shot, i’m still amazed on how steady my hand is. The above shot was shot at 50mm.
Babe Conde and Friends was really a very good group/band. They sing a lot of Filipino Christmas Carols that made us miss our beloved Philippines.

Psalmideo Chorale
Camera put on top of a stand, handheld - 0.3s, f/20, ISO 1600. I dunno why I choose this settings.

Sweethearts at the bay
This time I use a tripod. 0.5s, f/3.5, ISO 400. Quite a decent shot because of the tripod. The shot is after the concert at the bay.

Christmas at Orchard – 1st Night Out Date with EOS 500D
Everybody has a first time, and this night (December 13, 2009) was my 1st official date with my new Canon EOS 500D a.k.a. Rebel T1i.
The picture above was my first ever attempt to do a long exposure for a night shot, It took me at least 10 shots to finally get the image that I want, thats almost an hour of waiting for the traffic and figuring out what was wrong with my settings and redoing it again again.
The traffic that night in Orchard was so heavy that it makes my streaking light looks so stagnant! not to mention all the people walking around like ants that makes me almost impossible to setup my (lousy free) tripod. So me and wife decided to wait until around 11:30pm just to get a moving traffic and lesser people walking around bumping us and our camera.
It may not be a spectacular shot, but for a total newbie and 1st try (technically around 15tries) I could claim this one was a fairly decent shot.
Post processing:
Software: Capture One Pro
Contrast: 10
Saturation: 10
Brightness: -10 (because the 25sec exposure makes the image so bright)
Sharpness: 200
Crop: 950×534 (for this image to fit on this blog)
Lens Vignetting: -2Ev
The above shot is a little experiment on the really good feature of Canon EOS 500D – CREATIVE AUTO (CA) Mode.
Creative Auto (CA) mode allows you to adjust the “bokeh”, sharpness, Exposure and almost everything in the camera without fully understanding the Shutter Speed and Aperture to use. It’s like shooting in Program (P) mode but with indirect control over the shutter and aperture. This is a great and fun way especially for newbies like me to have a good, tolerably sharp images (or an image with decent bokeh) without worrying what to set on the camera.
Post processing:
Software: Capture One Pro
Contrast: 15
Saturation: 15
Sharpness: Amount 250, Radius 1, Threshold 1.2 (don’t ask me why, i just find it looks better. but i will research about this more later)
Crop: 950×689 (for this image to fit on this blog)
Lens Vignetting: -2Ev
Bokeh, Bokeh, Bokeh. I love the bokeh effect on this one, and it was achieved by simply using the creative auto. Set the background to blur and focus foreground to sharp, then shoot. No need to worry about Shutter and Aperture settings.
Post processing: same with #2 except for the resize

Ann @ Somerset 313
The above shot is another experiment of the preset mode of Canon EOS 500D – the Portrait Mode. The model is MY REAL DATE that night, and this was taken while we were having our dinner at Somerset 313.
Post processing:
Software: Capture One Pro
Exposure: -0.10 (to balance the overexposed part in the middle)
Contrast: 5
Saturation: 5
Brightness: 10 (to bring back the light)
Sharpness: 200
Crop: 950×633 (for this image to fit on this blog)
Lens Vignetting: -4Ev
High Dynamic Range: Shadow 30, Highlight 30
Style: Monochrome
